The Cost of Cars

In the late 1800s and early 1900s, Omaha was built around streetcars.

And then it was built around cars.

We know bringing a streetcar back wouldn’t eliminate cars in our city, and that’s not our goal.

What the streetcar can be is the next step to an integrated, efficient, affordable public transportation system.

A robust transportation system would mean that two car families could downsize to one car. Most people underestimate the cost of cars – here’s a calculator that helps illustrate the true cost of one and two cars. Nationally, this average is $8,469 per car each year.

What would you do with almost an extra $8,500 a year? That’s a lot of money per family that can be reinvested back into Omaha’s economy.
